Abstract
Background:Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by organisms from the genus Schistosoma. Aim:In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of PZQ, RSV, and SeNp against S. mansoni-induced renal injury. Methods:this was an experimental study; the study included six groups: Group (1) included non-infected non-treated mice. Group (2) included infected non-treated mice. Group (3) included infected mice treated with Praziquantel (PZQ). Group (4) included infected mice and treated them with Resveratrol (RSV). Group (5) included infected mice and treated them with and Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNp). Group (6) included infected mice and treated them with a combination of RSV and SeNp. Schistosomiasis renal injury was assessed by measuring proteinuria, serum creatinine, nitrate/ nitrite, specific gravity, and PH. Results:The study showed that histopathological examination of sections of the right kidney infected and treated with a combination of RSV and SeNp improved acute tubular injury to score 1 which was nearly normal, also there was no glomerular injury. Treatment with SeNp and RSV (G6) reduced serum creatinine levels with a mean of 0.5 and an SD of 0.Treatment with SeNp and RSV could improve the tubular injury with a mean of 1015.94 and an SD of 0.24. Conclusion:SeNp combined with RSV proved to be an effective regimen against schistosomiasis renal injury, by combination therapy; ATI was decreased with no glomerular injury. This may be due to the synergistic effect of both SeNp and RSV which improve kidney functions significantly.
