Descriptive Study of Clinicopathological Features, Treatment Options and Outcome of Gastric Cancer Patients at Suez Canal University Hospital.

Abstract
Background: Gastric cancer is the 5th most common cancer and the 4th leading cause of cancer death worldwide in 2020. The incidence of gastric cancer is highly variable by region and culture. It has a vague clinical presentation which makes it locally advanced at presentation. Different modalities of treatment have emerged for the treatment of gastric cancer nowadays. Aim: assessment of clinic-pathological presentation, treatment protocols, and outcome of gastric cancer in Suez Canal University Hospital. Patients and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the oncology department, Suez Canal University Hospital, Ismailia, Egypt. We recruited gastric cancer patients from 2017 to 2022. Clinicopathological data, treatment data, and outcomes were retrieved from medical records. Results: Among 49 cases, 61% were male. The mean age was 53. Comorbidities were found in 45% of cases. 35% were smokers. Family history was in 4% of cases. The most common symptom was abdominal pain in 46.9% of cases. The most common site of the tumor was the pylorus (42.8%). The most common histopathology was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Most cases were locally advanced at the time of diagnosis. Surgery was done in 61% of cases. Chemotherapy was given in the neoadjuvant settings in 37% of cases, in the adjuvant setting in 57%, and 28.5% in palliative settings. Radiotherapy was given in 26.5% of cases. Mean overall survival was 34 months. Conclusion: overall gastric cancer clinicopathological characteristics and treatment options at Suez Canal University Hospital are comparable to global characteristics.
