Abstract
Background: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) was found to be a member of the TNF receptor superfamily. Substantial studies indicate that OPG abnormality is associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Objective: to find out the relationship between Osteoprotegerin (OPG) polymorphism and the occurrence of carotid atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke patients.Subjects and Methods: A case-control study was conducted on 50 patients and 50 controls, aged 49-64 years old, patients are diagnosed with ischemic stroke, and recruited from the neuropsychiatry department of Suez Canal university hospital. The OPG rs3102735 gene polymorphism was examined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism, while the status of carotid arteries was studied by high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography. Results: The CC + CT genotypes and allele C frequencies of the rs3102735 gene polymorphism were significantly higher in the stroke patients than in the control group (98% vs. 86%, P = 0.04). We found no significant difference between Osteoprotegerin (OPG) rs3102735 polymorphism in patients regarding plaque morphology, stability, or stenosis degree (P value >0.05). Conclusion: no significant difference between OPG rs3102735 genetic variants and carotid atherosclerosis severity.
