Abstract
Background: HCV infection and its complications represent major public health problem in Egypt. Approximately 20% of chronically infected patients develop liver cirrhosis. Transient elastography (FibroScan) is a non-invasive test performed by a relatively small machine that can predict the progression of liver fibrosis. Aim: to assess the validity of fibroscan as a non-invasive technique to replace liver biopsy in evaluation of liver cirrhosis in hepatitis C patients. Subjects and Methods:This prospective cross-section study was conducted in National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute (NHTMRI) outpatient clinics from 1st of January 2016 to end of December 2016. Results: A total number of 34 patients with HCV were involved in the study. The mean age was 41±1.6 years, with male predominance. There was perfect agreement between the results of fibroscan and histopathology among (F0, F3 and F4) groups, substantial agreement in (F1) group and moderate agreement in (F2) group. Fibroscan score optimal cutoff point was measured (>7.6) with a sensitivity of 94.7% and specificity of 100% in predicting significant fibrosis (F≥2) “F2, 3, 4” and the was measured (>12.2) with a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 100% in predicting F4 fibrosis as detected by biopsy. Conclusions: Transient elastography(TE) by Fibroscan is a new noninvasive tool to diagnose and monitor liver fibrosis among patients with HCV infection.
